~*~ Poverty ~*~ (Extended Haiku) — Beckie’s Mental Mess

This Haiku is great, creative and beautiful. Some of the verses clearly portray the way many of those who suffer from poverty feel with lines like “Clinging on to dreams poverty has stricken them, share a bit of hope“. As well as ways to help those in need, “Pocket full of change could save for a rainy day, give someone in need.“. Reading this Haiku will give those insight on how one can help and how those people feel in a state of poverty through the use of a poem using literary elements to depict this message.

~ Poverty ~
(Extended Haiku)

Pocket full of change
could save for a rainy day,
give someone in need.
~
Clinging on to dreams
poverty has stricken them,
share a bit of hope.
~
Pocket full of change
help your fellow man and child,
give sunshine their way.
~
When we do our part
the beauty in gratitude
fills and warms their hearts.
~
We could do much more
United we can help build
a more loving world.

Policy affects Poverty

The policies created affect poverty. “The NYC gov poverty measure allows us to
measure the extent to which anti-poverty programs and work-related tax credits can
lift people over the poverty threshold”. https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/opportunity/pdf/NYCPov-Brochure-2018-Digital.pdf

Housing adjustment, social security, cash transfers, income taxes, SNAP(Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program), SchoolMeals, WIC(special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) all lower poverty rates. However, childcare, commuting, payroll taxes and medical expenses increase poverty rates.

Poverty in the Boroughs

According to The CEO Poverty Measure 2005-2012, the Bronx holds the top spot for impoverishment, with Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island holding the following four spots respectively. For a more recent statistic, the Bronx’s 2012 poverty rate was 26.6%, while Brooklyn’s trailed behind at 23.3%. Interestingly, Queens only found its poverty rate differing from the higher-ranking boroughs by about a mere 2%-5%, displaying a 21.9% rate. https://eportfolios.macaulay.cuny.edu/impoverishednyc/simply-the-facts/

This statistic shows how there are different poverty levels by each community. It is very unfair abevauzs the quality of life differs according to where you live.

My Presentation!

As the weeks have progressed I created an informative video based on the myths vs realities about poverty.

The reason I created this presentation was in order to inform people of the many misconceptios of poverty. Many are unaware that these misconcpetions are false and intrepret them as facts, without any evidence to prove it. With this video it can be backed up and explained into more detail and visual and audio uses.

I hope that it might reach a wider audience but due to the lack of popularity it is most likely not going to occur. Despite this, to whover watches I hope the message is evident and that with this presentation to spread and inform other so we all can understand the truth. Stay informed!

Poverty is an effect of our society, not the fault of the individual who has it

I created the presentation with the purpose of informing my audience. I want to make them aware about some incorrect assumption that they might have. I hope it will make my audience more open minded and somehow influence their actions to be better citizens.

Nowadays, when we see a homeless person or someone not as fortunate as us, we automatically make the assumption that its their fault their in that situation. Hopefully with this video we won’t be quick to jump to this conclusion.
